Caravanning in Europe

by Iris C on July 15, 2022

These two years, affected by the epidemic, people have increased their interest in RVs. Many travelers see an RV as a safer vacation option because it allows for social distancing.

Over the past few decades, Europe has developed into a true camping paradise. According to the latest statistics in 2021, the top four countries with open campsites in Europe are France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands, which basically have two or three thousand formal and mature camping sites.

Whether in summer in Scandinavia in the north or autumn in the Apennine mountains in southern Europe; whether in a family holiday home in the pine forests of Eastern Europe, or on the North Sea or Baltic coasts – you can find beautiful scenery anywhere, anytime campsite. Different countries also have their own unique camping methods under their own geographical environment and historical background.

1. Germany: Hanging tents on the treetops

Camping tourism is an important part of German tourism. According to the latest statistics in 2021, about 1.96 million German households own their own motorhome. Meanwhile, Germany has 3,097 open campsites offering more than 200,000 parking spaces. In 2021, around 33 million people stayed overnight in German campsites, an increase of 6.3% compared to 2020. About 1.6 million were foreign guests, half of the Dutch.

With clear lakes and large forests, Bavaria, Germany is the first choice for mountaineering campers. Recommended here is the Camping Hopfensee near Füssen in the Ost Allgäu county in Bayern. Opening hours are generally from April to December each year, there are 377 parking spaces, and the cost is 15 to 17 euros per night. You don't have to drive an RV here, you can also rent holiday homes and tents separately. In addition, it only takes less than two hours to drive from here to Munich, the capital of the state, or Innsbruck, the ski resort of Austria, with convenient transportation.

There is also an unusual way of camping in Bavaria, where tents are hung from branches, and campers can experience a heartbeat that is shaking in the air. Imagine watching the sunset with your loved one in the sky as the sun sets over the treetops, watching the Alps in the distance gradually darken, and then falling asleep as if hugging each other in a rocking cradle. This kind of tension in the air is like a heart-wrenching feeling.

2.The Netherlands: Staring at the stars on the beach

The Netherlands has a very small territory, but with 2,739 campsites, it is also the country with the highest concentration of campsites in Europe. There are nearly 90,000 motorhomes in the tiny Netherlands, and the Dutch Motorhome Club (NKC) has 31,227 members. In Europe, Dutch families can be seen everywhere with their RVs on the road.

The Netherlands is also known for its unparalleled camping experience. In addition to forests and grasslands, holidaymakers mainly like to go to the seaside or islands. For example, the Wadden Islands in the Netherlands lie on the beach every day to enjoy sunbathing, snorkel in the blue sea, and tents are set up on the beach one step away from the waves. There is a saying in Europe: If you haven't been to the Wadden Islands, you must have been to a fake Netherlands.

Tempelhof is a five-star seaside motorhome campground in the Netherlands, located in the north of the Netherlands, close to the North Sea and a 15-minute walk to the clean, miles-long beach of Callantsoog. There are 500 campsites in the camp, as well as 4 luxury villas, which cost from 30 to 70 euros per person per night. Compared to German campsites, the feature here is that it is also open in winter.

The salty sea breeze blows over the dunes, the nearby tulip fields are blooming, and the large windmills of the Netherlands are turning slowly in the distance. During the day, campers can listen to the waves while blowing the sea breeze, allowing the stress of everyday life to recede into the distance. In the evening, friends and family are sitting around the campfire, watching the stars in the sky, eating barbecue and drinking cold beer. This picture probably interprets a kind of life that many people yearn for.

3.Switzerland: Set up camp on a snowy mountain

Around 80,000 motorhomes have been registered in Switzerland in 2021, double the number in the past 10 years. There are a total of 396 campsites in Switzerland, 307 of which can be parked for motorhomes, most of which are located in the Valais and Bern tourist areas. Whether hiking, skiing or skating, or parachuting... Outdoor activities throughout the year are always inseparable from the mountains, rivers and waters of the Alps."Champing" is a new word invented by the British, combining "church" and "camping" into "champing". Can be translated as church camping. Since 2015, England has allowed campers to spend the night in 19 designated churches. You can even make a bed to sleep on a prayer bench, pitch a tent by the altar or in front of the organ. Wake up in the morning with the bell on the roof of the church, climb up the bell tower in the first ray of sunshine and have a panoramic view of the whole city.

Relying on the advantages of natural scenery, more than 150,000 tourists come to Switzerland for sightseeing and skiing every year. For every Swiss, skiing is a national sport from the 99th to the beginning. Even at the height of the new crown epidemic in 2020, the Swiss ski resorts still insisted on being open to all tourists, which shows that skiing is the true love of the Swiss.

As the most popular camp in Switzerland, Jungfrau Holiday Park attracts tourists from all over the world to experience the wooden house life under the snowy mountains. The camp also provides a free shuttle service to the ski slopes for all visitors, and there is also a dedicated ski shop in the camp.

Just imagine, in the most luxurious Zermatt ski resort in Switzerland, sitting on a cable car inlaid with 280,000 Swarovski crystals, you can see the glaciers formed over 10,000 years through the glass floor under your feet, and it only takes 9 minutes to reach the altitude. The highest station in Europe at 3821 meters, and then dashed down on the snowboard. After experiencing the speed of lightning, go to the sauna at the foot of the snow-capped mountain to steam your whole body, and then go to the tavern to order a glass of craft beer and eat a warm cheese fondue. The comfort and comfort are You can feel it in every hair on your body. After eating and drinking, I went back to the chalet and looked at the snow-capped mountains while roasting the fire. It seemed that I also realized the meaning of life.
